Introduction to Ink (Recording)
“Inking: An Introduction” is a 6-part course to introduce you to the world of inking, designed and taught by award-winning illustrator Mark Brewer (The New York Times, The Washington Post, Newsweek).
This in-depth course will take you from total beginner to feeling confident about inking original drawings. These lessons on how to use various inking tools and identify the types of ink and paper, along with demonstrations and examples, will fully immerse you in learning this medium. With time and practice, you’ll quickly develop your style and approach to inking.
Introduction to Ink 1: Inking with Dip Pens - Look at the types of nibs used with dip pen holders and learn how to choose the right nib for your drawing
Introduction to Ink 2: Fountain Pen Fundamentals - Learn the parts of a fountain pen, including filling, cleaning, troubleshooting, and preparing a new nib for inking
Introduction to Ink 3: Inking with a Fountain Pen - Discover different types of fountain pen nibs and the various lines you can create with these to define your style further
Introduction to Ink 4: Inking with a Brush - Learn how to use a brush for inking to achieve varying line sizes, identify the differences between various brushes, and practice using a brush for ink
Introduction to Ink 5: Inks and Papers for Pens and Brushes - Discover the various types of inks and papers used in inking, including similarities and differences, and how these affect your finished drawings
Introduction to Ink 6: Inking Techniques: Drop Shadows, Stippling, and Cross Hatching - Explore the techniques used in inking such as crosshatches, drop shadows, and stippling to define the character of your drawings
These Course Recordings are for beginner artists and will run for approximately 60 minutes each.

- Pen holder (either regular and/or crow quill) and nib(s) of your choice
- Black ink well for dipping
- Fountain pen(s)
- Black ink specifically made for fountain pens
- Scrap paper
- Container of water for rinsing

- Paper towel
- Hot press (smooth) watercolour paper (suggested: 140 lb/300gsm)
- White gel pen (optional)
- Hair dryer (optional)
